Stitching Identity: Flags, Pride and Memory
Every June 28, the LGBTIQANB+ community mobilizes around the world to raise awareness about the struggle against hate crimes. For me, more than a celebration, this date has always been a reminder that without justice, there is no pride — and that our flags are living symbols of our existence and resistance.
That's why I created this zine, part of a project called Stitching identity.
Stitching Identity: Textile Art in the LGBTIQANB+ Community aims to reclaim sewing as part of the historical development of queer communities and as a key tool for artistic and political expression. It highlights textile creation as a powerful act of visibility and resistance against gender-sexual discrimination.
In this fanzine you will find:
• A brief history of the community's flags.
• A mini guide to the flags in use today.
• Step–by–step instructions to make your own flag at home. The example given is a non-binary flag, but the technique works for creating any striped flag.
